Tunkwa Lake Provincial ParkProtecting the grasslands, forests and wetlands of the Thompson Plateau, is Tunkwa Lake Provincial Park. In 1966 both Tunkwa and Leighton Lakes and the surrounding grasslands encompassing a total of 5,100 hectares were set a side as a provincial park, which provides recreational opportunities.

Tunkwa Lake is made up of many bays, peninsulas and shallow patches at the north and south ends. Several streams feed the lake on the south side. Leighton also has many shallow bays, flats and 2 small islands on its east side. Both lakes offer excellent fishing.

Fishing - Tunkwa Lake and Leighton Lake are known as excellent trout fishing lakes. Tunkwa is one of the richest of the interior lakes with a huge chironomid hatch in spring. Spring and fall offer the best fishing with catches of rainbow trout up to 4 lbs. and better. Leighton is a fly fishers dream, with rainbows up to 4 lbs. but 7 and 8 pounders are not impossible to catch. There are boat launches at both lakes.
