Chatham Sound • Douglas ChannelMilbank Sound & Rivers Inlet

The Chatham Sound area, in which we will include Dundas Island, Portland Inlet, the Nass River, Prince Rupert and Skeena River area, is located in British Columbia’s North by Northwest Region.

This area, which is accessible mainly by float plane or boat, offers the sportsman exceptional fishing for Chinook, Coho, Pink and Chum salmon as well as Halibut, Yellow Eye Rockfish and Lingcod.

Chinook runs usually start showing up around mid-May, however feeder springs are present year-round. The peak of the Tyee Chinook run occurs during late June to mid-July.

Coho start arriving in late July. Peak time from the second week in August through mid- September offers the angler great Coho fishing. The run will taper off in October when the fish move into their home streams to spawn.

Chum and Pink salmon are available to fishermen during August, September and October months. Although not as heavily targeted as Chinook and Coho, these smaller salmon are a lot of fun to catch and excellent smoked fare.

Halibut and Rockfish are present year-round and have been known to reach incredible sizes. Lingcod are available in August, September and October.(See Game Fish of BC)

The coastal city of Prince Rupert can be reached by air from Vancouver, by coastal ferry from Port Hardy, or by land travelling west on Hwy. 16 from Prince George and through Terrace. Dundas Island area , Portland Inlet, Nass River area, Skeena River area and other great fishing destinations in the Chatham Sound area, can all be reached by float plane or boat.

Excellent lodges and charter services can be found in the North Coast area of B.C. that will cater to your every need and of course, get you to that once in a life-time trophy fish!
